Greenfield-Central rallies past Alexandria-Monroe for 33-27 victory

Nicholson scores three ways as Cougars erase early deficit

GREENFIELD, Ind. — Greenfield-Central overcame an eight-point first-quarter deficit and outscored Alexandria-Monroe 20-6 in the second half to earn a 33-27 season-opening Indiana high school football victory.

Alex scored 21 points in the opening quarter, but GC stayed within striking distance with 13. Neither team scored in the second period, sending the Tigers into halftime with a 21-13 advantage. The Cougars scored eight unanswered points in the third quarter to tie the game at 21. Greenfield-Central then outscored Alexandria-Monroe 12-6 over the final period to complete the comeback.

Kyson Nicholson made an impact in every phase for the Cougars. The sophomore rushed three times for 77 yards and a touchdown, caught two passes for 40 yards and another score, and returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Nicholson finished with 212 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Chase Antle filled in for the injured Draven Nolting completing 6 of 7 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Antle hooked up with Brady Martin for one score and Nicholson for the other. Martin caught two passes for 31 yards and Zadontis Williams added two receptions for 39 yards. Gabriel Everhart supplied Greenfield-Central’s other rushing touchdown and scored on a two-point conversion. Aidyn Farnell paced the defense with 10 solo tackles.

Alex outgained Greenfield-Central 432-255, but the Cougars made enough game-changing plays to overcome the difference.

Wyatt Fuller led the Tigers with 216 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. He also caught two passes for 36 yards and another score, finishing with 252 offensive yards. Alex quarterback Andru Segner completed 11 of 18 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 33 yards and a score. Bryson Eckler caught five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.
