Roncalli’s early scoring burst overwhelms Connersville

CONNERSVILLE — Roncalli delivered the decisive blows early Friday night, scoring 27 unanswered first-quarter points before pulling away for a 41-20 victory over Connersville in a sectional football opener.

The Royals’ opening-quarter barrage left the Spartans facing a four-touchdown deficit after just 12 minutes. Roncalli paired that offensive production with a scoreless first quarter defensively, establishing control before Connersville could get on the scoreboard.

The Spartans answered with six points in the second quarter, but Roncalli added seven to take a 34-6 lead into halftime.

The Royals extended their advantage again after the break. A seven-point third quarter, coupled with another defensive shutout in the period, made it 41-6 entering the fourth. Connersville scored 14 unanswered points in the final quarter to narrow the margin, but Roncalli’s early cushion held.

Roncalli improved to 8-2 and advanced to face Greenwood in the sectional semifinals. Connersville finished its season 4-6.

The Royals finished with 262 offensive yards, including 146 rushing yards, and recovered three Connersville fumbles.
