Lewis, Harris help Carmel edge Ben Davis, 28–24
Greyhounds combine productive ground game, big pass plays and three takeaways in four-point victory
Staff Report
CARMEL — Mychael Lewis supplied the steady gains, Chris Harris delivered the big plays, and Carmel found enough scoring from both to defeat Ben Davis 28–24 Friday night.
The Greyhounds scored three rushing touchdowns and one through the air in the Indiana high school conference football victory. Carmel improved to 4–3, while the visiting Giants fell to 2–5.
Lewis carried the bulk of the offensive workload, rushing 29 times for 146 yards and a touchdown. The junior averaged 5 yards per carry and broke a 35-yard run, providing the foundation for a Carmel offense that finished with 316 total yards.
When the Greyhounds went to the air, Harris supplied most of the production.
The junior caught three passes for 135 yards and a touchdown, averaging 45 yards per reception. His longest catch covered 52 yards, and he accounted for all but 16 of Carmel’s passing yards.
Quarterback Jackson Treadway completed six of 11 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on the ground, joining Lewis and Ayden Johnson in the rushing touchdown column.
Johnson added 31 yards on nine carries. John Feiock converted all four extra points, completing Carmel’s 28-point total in a game decided by four.
The Greyhounds also received significant contributions from their defense and special teams.
Drake Coellner and Evan Bardwell each intercepted a pass, while Deegan Thomas recovered a fumble. Those three takeaways gave Carmel additional possessions in a matchup that left little room for missed opportunities.
Drew Jones contributed across several categories, recording seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. He also forced a fumble and blocked a punt.
Sean Garvey led Carmel with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops. Coellner followed with 11 tackles and three passes defended in addition to his interception. Noah Hoffman added the Greyhounds’ other sack.
Carmel’s offense relied heavily on the running game, recording 48 rushing attempts against 11 passes. Lewis handled more than half of those carries, while Harris made the limited passing opportunities count with three substantial gains.
The combination gave the Greyhounds two distinct sources of production: a runner who repeatedly carried the workload and a receiver whose catches changed field position in a hurry.
Ben Davis finished just four points short, but Carmel’s four touchdowns, perfect extra-point kicking and three defensive takeaways provided enough for the home victory.
