Stars strike early, shut out Southmont 35–0

Western Boone scores five first-half touchdowns, then turns back Mounties’ threats to finish conference victory

THORNTOWN — Western Boone spent the first half building a commanding lead Friday night and the second half making sure Southmont never found the end zone.

Carson Nicley ran for two touchdowns, and the Stars scored all their points before halftime in a 35–0 Indiana high school conference victory. Western Boone improved to 5–2, while Southmont slipped to 4–3.

The game’s direction took shape on the opening possession. Starting at their own 20-yard line, the Stars kept the drive alive with a fourth-down run by Levi Adkins before Jack Mallory supplied a pair of gains that carried Western Boone deep into Southmont territory.

Rolen Shue finished the march with a 2-yard touchdown run. Benson Devol added the extra point, giving the Stars a 7–0 lead.

Western Boone’s defense followed by forcing a punt, and the offense went back to work. Quinton Westerfeld connected with Alexander Velazquez to move the chains, then Nicley broke a long run to the Southmont 5. Mallory eventually powered in from 3 yards out, extending the lead to 14–0 before the first quarter ended.

Southmont showed signs of moving the ball late in the period. Eli Hannum found Jaxon Wireman for a completion across midfield, but the possession stalled early in the second quarter. Another punt returned the ball to a Western Boone offense that was finding answers both on the ground and through the air.

Westerfeld opened the next scoring drive with a long completion to Kaleb Howe. The Stars continued into the red zone, where Nicley finished with a 6-yard touchdown run. Devol’s kick made it 21–0.

The Mounties’ next possession moved backward, leaving them punting from deep in their own territory. Western Boone took over at the Southmont 37 and capitalized again.

After an early setback on the drive, Westerfeld connected with Mallory to set up a manageable fourth down. Nicley converted with a run, later completed a pass to Beau Sawyer near the goal line, and scored from 5 yards out for his second touchdown of the quarter.

The Stars led 28–0, but their first-half scoring was not finished.

Following another Southmont punt, Western Boone took possession at its own 25 with roughly a minute remaining. Westerfeld moved the offense downfield through the air and capped the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass. Devol’s fifth successful extra point pushed the margin to 35–0.

Southmont briefly threatened to answer before the break, moving into Western Boone territory. David Puckett recovered a Mounties fumble, however, ending the opportunity and preserving the halftime shutout.

The second half brought more resistance from Southmont’s defense. The Mounties kept Western Boone off the scoreboard over the final two quarters, with Diego Castillo and Camden Laney among those producing tackles for loss.

Southmont’s offense also created opportunities, but turnovers and fourth-down stops prevented a breakthrough.

After the Mounties turned the ball over on downs on their first possession of the third quarter, Hayden Cornelius later recovered a Western Boone fumble to give Southmont a short field. Runs by Kasen Bushong and Hannum helped move the ball to the Stars’ 11-yard line by the end of the quarter.

Western Boone recovered a fumble at its own 8 early in the fourth, ending Southmont’s deepest recorded threat.

Another Mounties possession ended with a fumble in Stars territory. Southmont received one final chance after stopping Western Boone on downs at the Stars’ 25, but the home defense held again.

The offense had supplied the separation before halftime. Three fumble recoveries and a succession of defensive stops ensured Western Boone carried that advantage through the final whistle.
