Battle throws seven touchdowns as Speedway races past Heritage Christian 47-19

Sophomore quarterback passes for 334 yards in Sparkplugs’ season-opening victory

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Speedway quarterback Conner Battle threw seven touchdown passes as the Sparkplugs opened their Indiana high school football season with a 47-19 victory over Heritage Christian.

Battle completed 13 of 20 passes for 334 yards, directing a quick-strike offense that averaged more than 25 yards per completion. Speedway finished with 405 yards from scrimmage while scoring all seven of its touchdowns through the air.

Miles Cessna was Battle’s leading target producing a mammoth night catching four passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns. His longest reception covered 47 yards. Kellar Socks hauled in four passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns while adding 41 rushing yards. Mazeed Ishola scored on his only reception, a 47-yard catch and run.

Heritage Christian relied almost entirely on its running game, rushing 62 times for 253 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles attempted only two passes in the loss. Samuel Sponseller led Heritage with 70 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Anthony Duffy scored the Eagles’ other touchdown. Isaac Pimental drilled a 38-yard field goal.

Justus Klingerman led the Eagles’ defense with 10 total tackles. Garrett Taylor added eight tackles.
