Roncalli Overpowers Mooresville 55-19 to Capture Sectional Championship

INDIANAPOLIS — Roncalli’s powerful running game and explosive passing attack proved too much for Mooresville Friday night as the Royals rolled to a 55-19 victory, capturing the Class 4A Sectional 22 championship and extending their winning streak to nine games.

Running back Alex Jarvis rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Dominic Cromer threw three touchdown passes as Roncalli overwhelmed a Mooresville team that entered the championship riding a four-game winning streak.

The Royals finished with 235 rushing yards, their highest total since September 18, and combined that ground production with an efficient passing attack to score 55 points against the Pioneers.

Mooresville entered the contest with momentum after surviving a dramatic 22-17 victory over Beech Grove in the sectional semifinals. The Pioneers had won four consecutive games and were looking to continue their postseason run, but Roncalli presented a considerably more difficult offensive challenge.

The Royals established control through their ability to attack Mooresville in different ways. Jarvis provided the power and explosiveness on the ground, averaging 7.6 yards per carry, while Cromer repeatedly made the Pioneers pay through the air.

Cromer completed a productive night with 136 passing yards and three touchdowns on just nine attempts, although Mooresville did intercept one of his passes. His ability to generate three passing touchdowns with relatively few attempts gave Roncalli another dimension to complement its rushing attack. The senior connected on a pair of scoring strikes to Mikey Dillon and one to Luke Roeder.

Jarvis was equally effective, carrying the ball 18 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His performance continued an impressive late-season stretch in which he has become an increasingly important scoring threat for the Royals.

Roncalli’s offensive balance made it difficult for Mooresville to concentrate on stopping any one player. When the Pioneers had to account for Jarvis and the running game, Cromer provided the ability to move the football through the air. The combination allowed the Royals to build a substantial advantage and keep Mooresville from mounting a sustained comeback.

The Pioneers managed 19 points but could not match Roncalli’s scoring production. Quarterback Elijah Hill, running back Hunter Untersinger and receiver Cooper Jones had been important parts of Mooresville’s offense throughout the season, but the Royals limited the Pioneers to fewer points than they had averaged entering the championship.

Mooresville had relied on a productive passing attack during the regular season, with Hill averaging more than 200 passing yards per game. The Pioneers also brought a capable rushing attack into the matchup, but Roncalli’s defense prevented that combination from keeping pace with the Royals’ offense.

The 55-point performance continued an impressive postseason surge for Roncalli. The Royals opened sectional play with a 41-20 victory over Connersville before overwhelming Greenwood 56-13 in the semifinals. Friday’s championship gave Roncalli 152 points in three postseason games, an average of more than 50 per contest.

For Mooresville, the loss ended a season that included a strong finish and two postseason victories. The Pioneers defeated Muncie Central 48-21 in the opening round before holding off Beech Grove in a sectional semifinal that came down to the final minutes.

Roncalli, meanwhile, improved to 10-2 and will advance to face Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in the Class 4A regional round Friday at 7 p.m. The matchup will give the Royals an opportunity to avenge one of their two losses this season. Bishop Chatard defeated Roncalli 42-14 earlier in the year, but the Royals have not lost since that meeting.
